Tricia Cookson draws inspiration from familiar surroundings and daily routine. Exploring the effects of densely scheduled activities and over-stimulation in contemporary life, her work addresses notions of physical and mental tension. Rhythm, repetition, and ritual inform her process.

 

In this body of work she utilizes a practical exploration of large gauge crochet to create compositions that have the ability to support mass. Further, she examines the visual effect of suspension, as well as the relationship of weight and its absence on the crochet forms.

“Ubiquity & Balance” – Tricia Cookson presents her MFA Thesis Exhibition in the Desotorow Gallery.

“These Friends Too” – The Second Annual accumulation of artworks by friends! A diverse and spontaneous exhibition on the Starland Dairy with live music and food! Come on down the night before for the “Overnight Overhaul” – $5 to submit your work from 6pm-2am.

“Art Parade” – Starting at the Forsyth Fountain, march with us down Bull St. and finish up the shouting on Desoto Ave. Make some costumes the night before at the Overnight Overhaul!

Then boogie over to the Wormhole to watch Varuca’s American Debut at 10:30

We’ll be hanging artwork in Starland Dairy from 6pm-2am on May 2nd to set up for the Art March on Friday.

All work will be accepted for a $5 fee. Artists set sales prices and no fee’s will be taken from sale of artwork.

We will also be making costumes, capes, cool hats, and picketing signs for the Art Parade happening on Friday as well.

C’est Moi will feature three bodies of work Mangled, Transparent, and Scattered exploring the relationship between representation and the performative nature of identity through the medium of photography and video.

The show is at Desoto Row Gallery from April 17-22.

Gallery Hours are from 1-4 pm. Wednesday – Sunday . If you are unable to make it during this time please contact me and I will let you into the gallery to see the show.

The opening reception is on April 19 from 6-9.

All work submitted for REDUX must be made from recycled materials and should celebrate environmental consciousness or draw attention to the major environmental issues of our time. Consider such recent events as oil spills, destructive weather patterns caused by climate change, overpopulation, urban domination, and more.

Artists such as Robert Smithson, Henry Dean, Andy Goldsworthy, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude all explore the relationships between human beings and their environment. They manipulate landscapes, create found object sculptures, or even submerge canvases in muddy marshes for weeks. If art truly is the conscience of a society, what does it have to say about our impact on the earth?

Cruisers, Commuters, Single Speeds and Fixies all welcome.

“We experience the world through the senses, and the act of seeing is one of giving meaning, taking stock of our environment to counterbalance chaos. In the way that we are born into language, we also enter an unfolding, socially defined world of visual continuum.” – George Legrady

The exhibition presents “EXILE,” a video installation by wenjin zhou, SCAD M.F.A. interactive design and game development student.

Zhou creates a new form of poetics emerging from cinematic provocation of emotion with an emphasis on meta-narrative reflection on storytelling in digital medium. EXILE makes it possible to experience a new conception of the world, where there is no longer a linear relationship between cause and effect and no fixed point of view.

Structured as a big hypertext of film sequences, EXILE can be seen as a visual poem that plays on the central theme of existential loss. It explores the fragile inner life of the protagonists who take traveling as a mobile refuge from social circumstance by foregrounding their obscure psychological introspection. The process compounds the overall perceptual overload generated by alternating pure color shots, flickering images and audio fragments to reinforce the cinematic provocation of emotion that ruptures with standard narrative of progress. It is hoped that this strategy could arouse chaos of our strongest feelings and to establish an evocative relationship with the past as fragments of micro-narrative flash up in the present.

Reception: Friday, Mar. 8, 7:00-10:00 p.m.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
